Our Partnership:

Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) is proud to partner with and support Burlington School District as they provide high-quality professional learning experiences for faculty and staff related to district goals and initiatives. Through this partnership, course participants can earn transcribed SNHU credit for the successful completion of any course below. These credits are generally accepted at all accredited universities, pending its approval from the institution. You will have the option of an official university grade that’s accessible through an easy to use transcript that follows the accrediting guidelines of the New England Commission on Higher Education (NECHE).

Restorative Practices:

Course Description:

This 1 credit graduate course is designed in partnership with Burlington School District (BSD) and Southern New Hampshire University. It is for BSD educators and school leaders to provide the skills, understanding and capacity to implement Tier 1 RP work on a personal and systemic level. Key aspects of this course will include mindfulness, the circle process, restorative communication, the importance of relationship and community building, and culturally responsive pedagogy. Participants will gain an increased understanding of the concepts and principles of Restorative Practices. With this knowledge they will be able to connect and further understand the goals of the Burlington School District in regards to this work. Participants will be able to use restorative approaches in their classrooms including using circles for community and connections and ways to communicate with students in a restorative manner. Participants will examine their own beliefs and what portions of their selves connect or contribute to RP and take personal goals back to their classrooms and schools.

Course Description:

This course is intended for BSD educators with a foundation in Tier 1 Restorative Practices (RP). Participants will expand their knowledge and practice in regards to Restorative Practices by building upon Tier 1 community building circles into restorative responses to harm. Participants in this course will understand why handling harm and issues with students restoratively assists in the decrease of office referrals and suspension and enhances the ability of students to handle problems themselves. Participants will explore how Tier 1.5 circles can be used to address contemporary Social Justice issues and proactively prevent bullying and harassment. Course members will be provided with tools and strategies to use with students to address harm and conflict within schools by using restorative communication strategies and restorative responses to harm. This course will also offer participants the opportunity to learn about and reflect on their schools’ readiness to move to Tier 2 Restorative Practices.

Leadership:

Course Description:

The School Development Institute (SDI) is an annual opportunity for Burlington High School educators to invest deeply in transforming their practice to improve teaching and learning at BHS. The focus of the 2022 June Session of SDI will be to learn about School Operations, Administration and Leadership. Soon after, participants will apply this knowledge and their own educational experience and practice to work in small groups with students to rebuild key school-wide systems to help remove obstacles to achieving our ideal high school setting. This work operates on multiple levels, allowing a variety of entry points into the work — through administrative systems, professional development, school policy and enforcement, and shifting instructional practices. Participants will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of school operations and administration to create products that will further the improvement of teaching practices and learning environments in their classrooms and throughout BHS.

Teaching Practices:

Course Description:

The focus of this course will be to establish cross-curricular cohorts of teachers in which collaborative planning, teaching, feedback and observation of lessons and units will occur. This group will establish a pilot that will be incorporated school-wide after the protocols and materials have been developed and vetted.

Participants will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of instructional shifts to enhance collaborative teaching practices in general and in ways that are specific to our Community of Learners. They will create products that will further the improvement of teaching practices and learning environments in their classrooms and throughout BHS.
